Above Ground, the All-Star one-night-only event held at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on Monday night September 16 is a project of Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison that brings awareness to the music community for addiction recovery, mental health and suicide prevention with all proceeds going to the MusiCares Foundation. On this night, the star-studded lineup that included  Billy Idol, Jack Black, Perry Farrell (Janes Addiction), Gavin Rossdale (Bush), Al Jourgensen (Ministry), Steve Stevens, Steve Vai, Billy Duffy (The Cult), Juliette Lewis, Orianthi, Mixi Demner (Stitched Up Heart), Brad Wilk (Prophets of Rage), Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver) and many more making appearances to play two classic records, David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and The Stooges’ 1969 debut release, both played in their entirety.

Some of the night’s musical highlights included Al Jourgensen leading a killer version of The Stooges “Search & Destroy” (not part of the debut album but played none-the-less), actor Jack Black on vocals for David Bowie’s “Suffragette City” as well as Dave Navarro, Perry Farrell and Chris Chaney from Jane’s Addiction leading the Bowie monster hit “Ziggy Stardust”.

Amidst all the celebration on stage, there was a very touching moment when Dave Navarro spoke to the SOLD-OUT crowd telling about how he too has struggled in life and at one point two years ago wanting to take his own life but has made it through those times with the help of others.
