Ann Wilson @ City National Grove – 07/02/2017

Ann Wilson @ City National Grove – 07/02/2017While on hiatus from touring and making music with Heart, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ann Wilson is out on a solo tour doing what she does best on stage and made a stop at City National Grove in Anaheim on Sunday night July 2. Playing songs from Heart, cover songs of her favorite artists and influences as well as some Ann Wilson originals, this was sure to be an evening of unforgettable music by this iconic vocalist.

With no opening act, Wilson and her band – Craig Bartock on guitar, Andy Stoller on bass, Denny Fongheiser on drums and Dan Walker on keys – hit the

stage right at 8:00pm and didn’t waste any time convincing those in attendance this was going to be a special night as they opened with a cover of the Who’s “The Real Me” then right into Heart’s “Barracuda” and “Crazy on You”. At this point Wilson took a moment to thank all for coming and giving a brief insight into what the night will bring. Wilson would take a few minutes to provide some background on some of the songs she was singing and while explaining how the song “Anguish” was written she also stated that the Blues is not always about sitting around and bitching about things, that it is an outlet for expressing any feelings.

At 67 years young, Wilson not only looks fabulous but her vocal ability is spot on and it is quite a thrilling experience to hear. In addition to the powerful vocals, the band was top notch, most notably guitarist Craig Bartock who has to be one of the most talented six string masters you have never heard of and it was hard not to take notice of the dynamic hard hitting drumming of Denny Fongheiser.

The show consisted of two sets with a 20 minute break in between which allowed all to stretch their legs and refill their beverage of choice. The highlight of the second set was a cover of “I’ve Seen All Good People” by Yes that once again demonstrated her vocal power and diversity. The night ended with The Who’s “Love, Reign O’er Me” leaving all in attendance totally satisfied with the magic they just witnessed as well as wanting more from the amazing Ann Wilson. This was truly a real rock n roll show and confirmed Ann Wilson’s talents and relevance as a solo artist.

The Ann Wilson tour continues from the end of July through August –
