Behemoth @ The Wiltern – 11/24/2018
Behemoth closed out their Ecclesia Diabolica America 2018 tour with a SOLD-OUT show at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 24. A congregation of 1800 people bore witness to an unholy sermon of black metal. Wolves in the Throne Room and At The Gates started off the night, and succeeded in amping up the energy of the crowd. When Behemoth took the stage, they brought with them devastation and destruction on a biblical scale.
A thin cloth was raised to cover the stage while crew members prepared for Behemoth’s arrival. The air was thick with anticipation as some fans hurried to refill their drinks, while others eagerly watched through the curtain as the headliner’s instruments were swiftly set. Once the work was done, there was nothing left to do but wait for the main event, arguably the most grueling part of any concert. During this intermission, haunting children’s voices chanted Satanic lines over the intercom. Suddenly, the lights went down, and a single light danced at the back of the stage, reflecting several Behemoth logos onto the curtain. The images danced as the band took their places, their silhouettes flashing before the audience’s eyes.
The curtain was dropped, and Behemoth came into full view, wearing black robes and black skull masks not unlike those a dementor would wear (excuse the nerdy comparison). As they began their first song, “Wolves ov Siberia,” all in attendance went berserk for the black metal band. Behemoth has been gaining a lot of mainstream traction lately, despite their heavily Satanic imagery and lyrics. Plenty of fans could be spotted sporting t-shirts with the phrase “Behemoth is my fav Christian band” while charging through the mosh pit. Frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski even brought out some sage and smudged the stage, adding to the ritualistic experience of their performance. Behemoth is touring in support of their newest album, I Loved You At Your Darkest, which dropped on October 5, 2018. They played several songs from the record, including “Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica,” “Bartzabel,” and “God = Dog.”
The Polish black metal heavyweights just closed out their most successful tour yet, and it will be interesting to see where their growing popularity takes them. It’s safe to say that Behemoth will be willing to continue to bring the word of Satan to the masses for many years to come.
