In a call to action and encouraging fans to generate donations to gain entry, Linkin Park and their philanthropic project–MUSIC FOR RELIEF staged a star-studded relief concert this past Saturday evening (January 11th, 2014) benefiting victims of the November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Billed as the CONCERT FOR THE PHILIPPINES, the night generated $350k in donations and with tickets starting at $250/each this was definitely an exclusive charity affair.
Club Nokia at LA Live played a gracious host to this non-stop evening of music that included supporting acts Filharmonic, Travis Barker, Bad Religion, Offspring and Heart—capped off by an abbreviated set by multi-Grammy winning Linkin Park.
The evening (hosted by Ted Stryker from KROQ) moved smoothly with help from the no-frills turntable stage that helped with changeovers…however leading to a ‘half’ stage environment with eventually led to a cramped stage with Linkin Park’s performance.
Linkin Park hit the stage for their 12 song set that drew evenly from their 5 studio albums. Broadcast live on AXS.TV’s mobile app (and airing February 15th on the AXS Network), guitarist/vocalist Mike Shinoda called it “a dream come true” when Ann & Nancy Wilson from Heart joined the group onstage for ‘Castle of Glass’ halfway through the set.
Guitarist Mike Einzinger (Incubus) made a special appearance on ‘What I’ve Done’ & ‘In The End’, adding depth to already powerful songs.
Shinoda and lead singer Chester Bennington took ample time to thank the numerous individuals and agencies, many of who donated their time and efforts to this worthwhile cause this evening before finishing the evening with ‘Bleed It Out’, accompanied by drummer Travis Barker.
Donations are still being accepted as well as amazing auctions that are still active, visit http://www.musicforrelief.org for more info.
