Corey Taylor is without a doubt a member of two of the biggest hard rock/heavy metal bands in the world – Stone Sour and Slipknot respectively and has played in front of hundreds of thousands of fans over the years. Well in-between fronting those two bands, Taylor likes to perform solo billed as Corey Taylor & Friends and he and his band played a solo show at Garden Amphitheater in Garden Grove on Sunday night May 19.

Opening the show was the “Darlings of Rock n Roll”, The Cherry Bombs. Fronted by Taylor’s girlfriend Alicia Dove, The Cherry Bombs are a group of professional dancers, aerialists, fire artists, hoopers, and pole dancers that put on an entertaining show with the highlight for sure being the fire acts. This group of female performers certainly heated things up early in the night and got the crowd primed and ready for Corey Taylor.

Taylor hit the stage about 8:15pm just as a very light rain started to fall but he quickly assured the crowd that a little rain wouldn’t stop the show. Along with best friend and bassist Jason Christopher (Prong/Ministry), drummer Brandon Pertzborn (Marilyn Manson) and guitarist Zach Throne, the band kicked into “Love Song” by The Damned and from there played an eclectic set of songs that ranged from Prince to ZZ Top to Asia, The Beatles and many more.

Corey Taylor is extremely talented and can sing any song by any artist and sound amazing. He stated that most people would be surprised at the setlist as they are all songs he loves. He dedicated Mother Love Bone’s “Bone China” to his bandmate in Slipknot Shawn “Clown” Crahan” whose daughter passed away earlier that day and Taylor stated the only reason he was able to get through the day was by playing for the crowd on this night.

This was a fun set and all the guys on stage were having a great time, Taylor put down the guitar and sang Poison’s “Nothin But A Good Time” and the band did a killer version of Prince’s “Cream”. Taylor mentioned that his “new” knees were doing well, and he was ready to hit the road (he had double knee surgery only about a week before this show). As the show came to a close with the Boz Skaggs hit “Lido Shuffle” the sky opened up and it started pouring – perfect timing as the tarp over the Amphitheater let go and LOTS of water came down on the stage.

A KILLER show that demonstrated the immense vocal talent by Corey Taylor. This was no doubt his last solo show for quite some time as he hits the road with Slipknot for the summer European festivals then back to the states for a US tour in July.
