Deftones @ Mattress Firm Amphitheater – 07/07/2017
Out supporting their April 2016 release Gore, hard rock veterans Deftones are on the tail end of a massive 8 week North American tour with fellow rockers Rise Against and Thrice. The tour made a stop in Chula Vista at Mattress Firm Amphitheater on Friday night July 7. Fans of all ages showed up wearing their favorite band t-shirts as the almost capacity crowd rocked just as hard as the bands throughout the night.
Southern California natives Thrice hit the stage and took the opportunity to showcase their hard rockin talents to the large crowd. Although faced with a few technical difficulties, the band unfazed provided an energetic set to help get the night started. Crowd favorites were “Hurricane,” and their big hit “Black Honey.”
As the crowd waited for Rise Against to take the stage, several people had to be pulled out of the GA pit, a few looked ill/faint, a few were too rowdy. One man got pulled out because, not wanting to lose his front row spot, decided to urinate right there on the spot, which didn’t go over well with security. Rise Against always delivers a big show and is quite a lively band onstage. The band is on tour promoting their new album Wolves which came out just a month ago.
They kicked off their set with “Ready to Fall” and “The Good Left Undone” and ended the night with their two biggest hits, “Prayer of The Refugee,” and “Savior”. Another kick-ass Rise Against show in the books!
Deftones took the stage on this ultra-warm SoCal night as marijuana smoke permeated the air as concert goers geared up for the rush of the Deftones set. The band kicked off the night with “Headup” as the very engaging Chino Moreno commanded the crowd with his sexy dancing, jumping up and down at the very edge of the stage, playing the guitar, and coming up and to the front of the GA pit to high-five the fans. He even let the fans up front sing along with him to the chorus in “Knive Prty” later on in the show. He is a very easy-going often smiling while he sings and repeatedly and sincerely thanking the crowd for their support.
The fact that the band very much enjoy performing for and interacting with the crowd makes all the difference in the world when it comes to putting on a dynamic and memorable show. Giant stadium and Amphitheater gigs can feel impersonal, but Chino Moreno and the band have a knack for making you feel like you are at a much more intimate show. Moreno checked in with the crowd often by saying, “Hello, hello! How’s everybody doing? Aw man, it’s Friday night. I wanna see everybody get up.”
Crowd favorites were “Elite” (Chino Moreno had the whole stadium swing their hands in the air from side to side), “Change (In the House of Flies)” where all it took was the first chord of the song to have the amphitheater erupt into a frenzy.
The band ended this memorable night with “Rosemary” then “Teething” and as the band left the stage sweaty and tired, the crowd only wanted more. Deftones can be seen again in Southern California on November 4 as they are participating in the 2017 version of Ozzfest meets Knotfest at Glen Helen Amphitheater.
