Devildriver @ The Whisky A Go Go – 11/16/2018
Santa Barbara groove metal kings Devildriver played a SOLD-OUT show at the world famous Whisky A Go Go on Friday night November 16 with an opening set from Ukrainian metalcore wizards Jinjer in direct support. The Sunset Strip was buzzing with Heavy Metal on this night as across the street from the Whisky at The Viper Room was Philip Anselmo & The Illegals playing a SOLD-OUT show with a complete Pantera set – long live METAL!
Out supporting their 8th release from July 2018, Outlaws ’til the End: Vol. 1, a cleverly put together Outlaw Country covers album that infuses the Devildriver metal grove into such hits as “The Man Comes Around” and “Ghost Riders in the Sky” by Johnny Cash as well as hits from Hank Williams Jr, David Allan Coe, Willie Nelson and many more, the album is a first of its kind and since it is labeled as Vol 1, we can only hope a Vol 2 sees the light of day in the future.
Devildriver wasted no time in getting the pit moving as they opened the show with the fast-paced “Ruthless” then into “Hold Back the Day”. Vocalist Dez Fafara is the ultimate frontman as blasts out his screams with passion and angst. Devildriver have gone through lineup changes over the years but this may very well be the most brutal lineup the band has had with long-time guitarist Mike Spreitzer commanding his side of the stage as fellow guitarist Neal Tiemann rips it up on his end. Drummer Austin D’Amond is a heavy hitter who holds down the groove with his low-end partner bassist Diego Ibarra.
Any Devildriver performance is a high impact show with lots of crowd movement but on this night it was intensified 10-fold due to the Whisky being such a small venue. Fafara had the crowd in the palm of his hand all night long. Things slowed down slightly for a beautiful cover of AWOLNATION’s “Sail” and then things got crazy again with “Clouds Over California” and “I Could Care Less”.
In direct support for Devildriver on this tour is Jinjer who play a sort of progressive death metal / metalcore led by female vocalist Tatiana Shmailyuk who is a pleasure to hear and watch on stage. Jinjer won the Best Ukrainian Metal Act Award in 2013 and has taken off globally since then. Currently working on a new album, a band to watch for sure.
