Doro @ Parish Room: House Of Blues Anaheim – 04/18/2019

One of the best packaged Heavy Metal tours of 2019 made its way through Southern California with a stop at The Parish Room at House of Blues Anaheim on Thursday night April 18. The Metal Queen Doro (Pesch) along with early thrash metal influencers Metal Church are out on a co-headline tour and are delivering a one-two punch of classic heavy metal to the masses.

Led by founding guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof, Metal Church hit the stage and kicked off 75 minutes of precision, galloping heavy metal that had the standing room only crowd in a frenzy. The band started the night with the title track off their 2018 release Damned If You Do then into one of the most mesmerizing songs in their catalog “Needle and Suture” from 2016’s XI, proving that the band has created some of their best music some 35+ years into their career.

Vocalist Mike Howe with his piercing vocals is very active and animated onstage while interacting with the fans. The current lineup is rounded out with Steve Unger on bass, Rick Van Zandt on second guitar and Stet Howland on drums. The band is as tight as ever and the fan reaction to “Watch the Children Pray” and “Beyond the Black” was electrifying. The night ended with “Fake Healer” then “In Mourning” and Metal Church proved once again they should be included in any discussion regarding the beginnings of thrash/metal music.

After a brief set change the lights dimmed and Doro and her band hit the stage with a bang as they kicked off the set with the Warlock song “I Rule the Ruins”, a fantastic song to begin with and get the fans pumped for the show. Doro earns her title of The Metal Queen every night onstage as she is a ball of fire with boundless energy as she belts out the lyrics often fist pumping and high fiving the crowd. She looks fantastic and her voice still sounds amazing – you could close your eyes and think it was the late 80’s. With her German accent and much enthusiasm she would speak to the crowd in- between songs as it is quite evident how much she appreciates her fanbase.

Doro is in great company on stage for this tour with long time bassist and drummer Nick Douglas and Johnny Dee respectively. Both have been with Doro for over 25 years and both remain precision musicians. This tour has a killer guitar duo of Bill Hudson (I Am Morbid) and non-other than former Warlock guitarist Tommy Bolan. Both of these gentlemen are total shredders and quite the performers on stage. The band coupled with Doro on vocals is without a doubt one of the best shows you will see in 2019.

Mixing in some new songs off the 2018 CD Forever Warriors, Forever United, Doro played a few solo classics mingled with several Warlock hits resulting in a career spanning performance. Highlights included ”Burning the Witches”, “All We Are” and “Hellbound” along with a Judas Priest cover of “Breaking the Law”.

Metal Church and Doro – a genius of a touring package! A night of classic HEAVY METAL with two bands that bleed the music they play. Be sure to catch this show – it’s not one to miss.
