Doyle @ Malone’s Bar & Grill – 12/12/2018
Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein best known as the guitarist for The Misfits and more recently his own band Doyle released Abominator in 2013 and their sophomore effort Doyle II: As We Die in June of 2017 and have spent the better part of 2018 out on the road supporting that effort. Southern California got a quadruple Abomination as Doyle played Brick by Brick in San Diego on 12/10, Malone’s in Santa Ana on 12/12 then two nights at The Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood on 12/13 and 12/14.
For 60 minutes Doyle, vocalist Alex “Wolfman” Story, drummer Wade Murff and bassist Brandon Strate delivered a high energy, in your face, brutally heavy show. Doyle is literally a beast on his guitar down stroking like he is in a heavyweight championship fight and his guitar time and time again is the loser. Story introduces each song with “this is a Love song, you can dance to it if you like” and is like a dying fish flopping all over the stage and at one point climbing the guitar stacks and poking his head into the drop ceiling tiles.
Focusing on material from the two Doyle albums, there was no Misfits songs on this night which was no big deal as the Doyle material stands on its own. It’s heavy, it’s riff driven and memorable. After touring for the better part of five years as a headliner in smaller venues, hopefully we see Doyle on a bigger stage touring with bands like Rob Zombie, Wednesday 13 or even Cannibal Corpse.
