Driftwood Festival @ Doheny State Beach – 11/11/2017

Chase Rice @ Doheny State Beach – 11/11/2017After a very successful inaugural one day festival in 2016, Driftwood returned to the beautiful Doheny State Beach in Dana Point for two days of Country music, craft beer and delicious BBQ on Saturday November 11 and Sunday November 12. With PERFECT weather – a beautiful 70 degree sunny day – SoCalMusicToday.com attended Saturday’s festivities.

As you walked into the venue you were handed a small wine shaped glass with the Driftwood festival logo on it  . . . this was your ticket to walk through all the dozens of local breweries setup on the beach side of the event and fill up your glass (for free) to taste all the wonderful beers on premise. The beer tasting lasted until 4:00pm all while the music had started at 1:10pm with a set by Mark MacKay to get things kicked off.

While the music was playing, you could also participate in line dancing, ride a mechanical bull or browse the plentiful vendor village as well as grab some amazing barbecue to compliment your beer. The festival appeared to have drawn a capacity crowd as late in the day it was jammed up everywhere with people looking to have a good time.

The musical acts included many elements of country music all with a modern twist and one of the highlights of the day was without a doubt Orange County’s own Lit who have recently added a bit of country flare to their music. The view from the stage was certainly breath taking as in addition to the legions of fans, the bands had an amazing view of the beach leading to the Pacific Ocean with palm trees scattered all around the grounds.

Although all the wonderful amenities at Driftwood made for an amazing day, the focus was the music and a fantastic lineup on Saturday treated the fans to a wonderful dose of Country music.

Caroline Jones

Singer, songwriter, producer and a multi-instrumentalist Caroline Jones is one of the current rising young artists in Nashville and Country Music. She played cuts from her new EP Bare Feet and certainly had a fan-base out in the crowd at Driftwood.

Orange County natives Lit were certainly a home town favorite at Driftwood. The band has kept its core of vocalist A. Jay Popoff, guitarist Jeremy Popoff and bass player Kevin Baldes together since the bands creation back in 1995. Playing hits from their back catalog as well as some newer country infused music, the band had the crowd rocking early in the day. A Thousand Horses vocalist Michael Hobby joined Lit onstage for a few verses and the band had the entire Driftwood crowd jumping along to their set closer and biggest hit “My Own Worst Enemy”. Lit’s new album These Are the Days hits the streets on December 15th.

A Thousand Horses

American country rockers A Thousand Horses took Driftwood on a musical journey much in the same vein of Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. A great follow up to Lit and A Thousand Horses kept the party rockin!

Cassadee Pope

Season three winner of The Voice, Cassadee Pope is another rising young country star and she delivered an upbeat and energetic performance as the day turned into night. Pope stated this was her last show of the year and she also debuted two new songs to add to the awe of her show.

Frankie Ballard

Baby faced country music vocalist and guitarist Frankie Ballard revved up the ladies in attendance as he took the stage and delivered a very inspired set that included a killer rendition of Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog and Heartbreak Hotel.

Chase Rice

The time had finally come for headliner Chase Rice to hit the stage. The 2010 Survivor: Nicaragua runner up delivered a country infused rock show that had the crowd rockin. Rice and his band mates are obviously influenced by main-stream rock n roll as the songs were very guitar driven and his band very active in the set. Rice’s new album Lambs & Lions is to be released on November 17. A fantastic way to the Driftwood Festival.
