Epica & Lacuna Coil @ The Novo – 09/15/2017
On Friday September 15, The Ultimate Principle Tour swept through Los Angeles leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Epica and Lacuna Coil have joined forces to decimate cities and melt faces with hard-hitting metal. The leading ladies of these phenomenal bands are some of the best in the business, and they continue to prove that the metal genre is no longer just a man’s arena. With a collective thirty-four years in the industry, Epica and Lacuna Coil seem to only get better with time. The fans who attended the Los Angeles stop of the tour at the Novo got to witness a beautiful storm of female fronted symphonic metal.
Lacuna Coil is a band that knows how to put on a show, and this was evident from the moment they appeared on stage. They emerged wearing full faces of makeup, and clothing straight out of a sanitarium, which was only fitting, given the theme of their album Delirium. The band played several songs from the album, which is their latest full-length release, including “Spellbound,” “Blood, Tears, Dust,” and “My Demons.” Cristina Scabbia gave a flawless performance (as did the rest of her band mates), and her passion for singing and performing emanated from her. The band made the audience feel like they were a part of the family, as Scabbia stated that “everyone is welcome at the Lacuna Coil sanitarium- we may look different from each other, but we all bleed, we all shed tears, and one day, we will all turn back to dust.” The powerful statement resonated with the audience, and a sense of camaraderie filled the room. After nearly twenty years in the business, Lacuna Coil continues to put on unforgettable performances and bring their fans together.
Epica hit the stage in a thunderous flurry of symphonic keyboard notes, guitar riffs, and sequins. When the opening notes to “Eidola” began, and Simone Simons and company finally emerged, the crowd became ecstatic. Simons, dressed in a classy sequined dress, blended her dulcet voice with crushing guitar notes to create a beautiful yet brutal metal experience. Throughout the entire set, Coen Janssen was the essence of energy, utilizing a rotating, wheeled keyboard that allowed him to move freely around the stage. The band recently released their new EP, The Solace System. They performed songs including, “Edge of the Blade,” “The Essence of Silence,” and “Cry for the Moon,” and those in the middle of the pit formed a mosh pit that lasted for the majority of the show. Fans were in for a special surprise when Epica invited Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil back onto the stage to perform “Storm the Sorrow” with them. The voices of Scabbia and Simons melded and complimented each other beautifully, and the audience was entranced. Epica closed the show strong with “Cosign to Oblivion,” and they left the spectators wanting more.
Los Angeles could not prepare for when The Ultimate Principle Tour made a stop at the Novo in the heart of the city. Epica and Lacuna Coil came together to headline a dream tour of powerful female fronted metal. Each band has been cranking out great tunes for decades, and their fans are excited to see what is in store for them next. One thing that is certain is that with Epica and Lacuna Coil, the journey will never be boring!
