Punk Rockers Against Me! brought their own Transgender Dysphoria Blues to the House of Blues in San Diego on September 30th.  The Florida based punk band delivered a short but powerful set of tunes, many of them from the 2014 concept album of the same name which frontwoman Laura Jane Grace wrote about a transgender prostitute, with themes echoing her own coming out as a transgender woman in May of 2012. The band was in fine form with drummer Atom Willard as a standout, his fierce energy behind the kit breathes new life into some of the band’s older songs. Hits from 2007’s New Wave were the crowd favorites of the night with highlights including “Stop!” and a screaming rendition of “Thrash Unreal” that brought crowd surfers over the rail.

Headlining the evening was New Jersey punk/rock act The Gaslight Anthem.  These anthemic rockers mix punk and classic rock ideas in an interesting way and drew a huge crowd of loyal fans in San Diego. The band is touring in support of their latest release, the 2014 album Get Hurt.  A highlight of the set was new single “Stay Vicious,” a grooving, drum heavy song featuring fierce vocals by frontman Brian Fallon.  The song makes a great opener and pairs nicely with familiar hits like “45.”  Overall the two bands mixed very well together for a great cocktail evening of punk rock.
