Godsmack @ Fivepoint Amphitheater – 08/04/2018Bringing a nearly unlimited supply of fire, heavy riffs and new material to SoCal, the co-headlining tour featuring Godsmack and Shinedown rocked its way into Orange County on Saturday, August 4th. A near capacity crowd at Irvine’s FivePoint Amphitheatre took advantage of a beautiful summer evening to take in the multi-platinum groups as many concert goers took part in the Live Nation ‘Ticket To Rock’ promo which bundled tickets for this summer’s biggest rock shows for one low price.

The two headlining acts have a decent amount of history together additionally both groups released new albums within one week of another a few months back so a summer tour was only fitting. Playing abbreviated sets due to the ‘co-headline’ nature of the tour, Godsmack most noticeably was forced to cut many of their classic hits from the mix. With a new album of material (When Legends Rise released in late April), there obviously was coverage of the new tunes needed during the set.

With pyro and flame bursts lighting the stage behind them throughout the set’s opening number “When Legends Rise”— vocalist Sully Erna’s snarky, brash New England attitude was on full display. “1000hp” and “Keep Away” followed closely behind and helped fuel the crowd with aggressive energy. The band’s iconic lead singer, Erna took time in between songs to discuss his new hair gel and share his appreciation for the crowd. Mid set hits included “ Awake” and the haunting “Voodoo” led perfectly into the now show standard drum solo by Shannon Larkin and then a straight-up percussion duel with Erna, who jumped behind a second drum set.

Latest single, “Bulletproof” was well received and currently sits in the #1 spot on the mainstream rock charts. A cover of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way” was a quick warm-up for what would be the night’s closing song “I Stand Alone”, the 2002 mega hit from The Scorpion King soundtrack.

Godsmack Setlist:  When Legends Rise | 1000hp | Keep Away | Cryin’ Like A Bitch | Unforgettable | Awake | Someday | Voodoo | Batalla De Los Tambores | Whatever | Bulletproof | Rocky Mountain Way | I Stand Alone

With six albums and over 10 million in worldwide record sales, Shinedown more than held their own with a solid 13 song set that included “Sound Of Madness” as well as “Second Chance”, the mainstream crossover that hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts back in 2008.

Lead singer Brent Smith’s energy was on point as he prowled the stage fiercely throughout the 75 minute performance. A firework shower was a certain highlight as lead guitarist Zach Meyers ripped through “Cut The Cord”. The lead single off their May 2018 release Attention Attention, “Devil” (which reached #1 on mainstream rock charts) completed their set.

Shinedown Setlist:  Sound Of Madness | Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) | Cut The Cord | How Did You Love | I’ll Follow You | Bully | Get Up | Enemies | Black Soul | State Of My Head | Second Chance | Simple Man | Devil

New Zealand’s Like A Storm kicked the evening off with a sun-filled 30 minute set that consisted of 5 songs that included “Pure Evil” and “Love The Way You Hate Me”. Lead singer Chris Brooks incorporated a didgeridoo solo to start the show but the rest of the short performance consisted of heavy rock, especially on “The Devil Inside”—which is the lead single off Catacombs, released in late June.
