Greta Van Fleet @ The Observatory North Park - 09/23/2018Greta Van Fleet’s sold-out show at The Observatory North Park in San Diego on Sunday night September 23 was one for the record books. Fans of all ages packed the venue and brought with them a tremendous level of excitement. The lone line outside the venue started to form well before noon. A second line began to form at the West Coast Tavern entrance – if you bought $20 worth of food and/or drinks, you’d be able to get into the venue earlier than the line snaking around the building. Fans were frantic. They wanted to get in any way they could. And, finally, they did – they streamed inside and filled the venue to the brim. It is quite possible that the show was oversold. I’ve been to many sold-out shows at The Observatory North Park, and it has never felt that packed, that hot, that muggy.

The Michigan boys took the stage at 9:19pm. They were in great spirits, smiling broadly as they took their spots and picked up their instruments. Lead singer, Josh Kiszka, had a handful of long-stemmed white roses bundled up in his arm. He approached the edge of the stage and tossed the roses to fans at the railing. A small gift, perhaps, for those that had waited outside for 10+ hours?

The biggest gift of all, of course, was the music. If you were impressed by the rock ’n’ roll blues on their 2017 EPs Black Smoke Rising and From the Fires you would have beem blown to bits by the live performance of these same songs. Their setlist was short, only nine songs, including the two song encore. Yet, their performance did not feel short at all. Each song was expertly extended by guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner – some renditions lasting almost 10 minutes.

You can’t miss these guys when they come through town again. You just can’t. It won’t be long before they are playing for 12,000-14,000 fans instead of 1200-1400 people.

Dorothy delievered a powerful performance as the supporting act. They left the concert attendees saying, “Who WAS that band?”
