Halestorm @ House of Blues Anaheim – 10/20/2017

Halestorm @ House of Blues Anaheim – 10/20/2017Hard Rock road warriors Halestorm who are seemingly always on tour played the last night of their “Halloween Scream” tour to a SOLD OUT crowd at House of Blues in Anaheim on Friday night October 20. Along for the ride as openers were New Years Day with direct support from Starset. While the band has not released a full length album since 2015’s Into the Wild Life, Halestorm did release an EP of covers in 2017 – ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP, but that has not stopped the fanatical Halestorm fans from attending live shows – there can never be too much Lzzy Hale!

Both New Years Day and Starset put on stellar opening performances to start the night as the venue was quite packed when New Years Day first took the stage as the LONG line of fans trickled in. The new House of Blues in Anaheim that opened its doors earlier in 2017 holds 2,200 people and the place was packed to capacity by the time the lights went down and Halestorm took the stage.

The show began in epic fashion as Lzzy Hale with a new short hair style, dyed jet black (similar to Joan Jett style) took the stage in the dark as she sang the opening to “I Get Off” A cappella then the band blasted in and this began an epic performance by Halestorm for the next 90 minutes. The band then went into “Apocalyptic” as Lzzy quickly reminded all in attendance of not only her vocal talent but her guitar mastery as well.

Halestorm @ House of Blues Anaheim – 10/20/2017With a colorful and busy light show to add to the energy of the music, drummer (and Lzzy’s brother) Arejay Hale is one of the most flamboyant drummers in the business as he never sits still – playing while standing, throwing his sticks and catching them, Arejay is all over his kit. Guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith round out the band who are extremely tight after now being together in their current form for about 13 years.

Lzzy led the way with a few cover songs – Whitsnake’s “Still of the Night” and then a heartfelt tribute to the late Chris Cornell with a cover of Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days” in between all the Halestorm hits and fan favorites such as “Dear Daughter” and “It’s not You”. This band puts on an amazing show as Lzzy Hale is certainly carrying the torch as the modern day “Queen of Rock n Roll”. Her talent is endless as she rocks the guitar, even plays a double neck as well as the piano all while rocking 6 inch heels. But her voice is the real star of the show as she nails the ballads and cranks out the fast ones.

Arejay got a few minutes in the spotlight with a more than memorable drum solo with the band ending this epic performance with “Mayhem” then “I Miss the Misery”. At the end of the 90 minutes the crowd was hot, sweaty and tired but wanted more as Halestorm just rocked their asses off.

We all await the next Halestorm full length album which hopefully hits the streets in 2018 but you can catch them live one more time in Southern California at The Loudwire Muisc Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday night October 24.
