Hoobastank @ Sutra Lounge 06/10/09
Sutra Lounge in Costa Mesa continued their new Acoustic series, this time bringing the local licks of multi-talented rock band Hoobastank to the quaint venue, located in the triangle square complex. The small venue was packed with ecstatic Hoobastank fans from all over Southern California on Wednesday night.
Front-man Doug Robb commented at the fact that this was the first time the rock band had played a full show in this sort of atmosphere before, but they seemed well suited for the slower paced venue. The band was very relaxed for the show, often laughing and joking with each other, and the crowd in between songs.
During one break, Drummer Chriss Hesse started softly knocking out the beat to Metallica’s “One”, which Guitarist Dan Estrinn and bassist Jesse Charland qiuckly picked up on and joined in. Laughing a bit Doug joined in rocking at a verse, to wild applause from the audience.
Working their way through a 14 song set, they covered all the songs that a true Hoobastank fan would want to hear including “Up and Gone,” “Pieces” and “Crawling in the Dark” all from their 2001 debut self-titled album.
Doug invited the venue to a sing-a-long version of “My Turn” off their current 2008 release For(n)ever. Touching on all 4 albums they kept the crowd waiting for the title track of their 2004 Gold album “The Reason,” which sent the crowd into a wild frenzy, with many in attendance singing along.
Hoobastank will be touring over seas for awhile, but there was a rumor of a possible late July show in Orange County.
