Making the final stop on their 35 city co-headlining tour, The Summer Gods Tour featuring Third Eye Blind and Jimmy Eat World stormed through Irvine on Saturday, August 3rd. A nearly sold out crowd was treated to an evening of nostalgic rock & roll from the late ‘90s/early 2000s. Both bands (originally formed in 1993) each certainly attracted a similar target market over the years with their straight forward rock. Although the night promised to be filled with well-known classic hits from both of these acts, each has new material that begged to be played.

While Third Eye Blind was the closing band on each night of the tour, Jimmy Eat World came out swinging like a champ shortly after 7:45pm with a trio of hits – “Pain”, “Futures” and “Bleed American”. Lead singer Jim Adkins maintains the same energy and charisma level from the band’s early formation days in Mesa, Arizona when the band exploded onto the scene. The stage backdrop left little to be questioned, with a giant banner and four large fans the band breezed through their set in exactly one hour managing to also work in “Love Never”, a new track released last year.

The band managed to remind casual fans song after song of their strong catalog of hits. Their 2001 release of Bleed American spawned four Top 20 Alternative Hits including “Sweetness”, “A Praise Chorus” and “The Middle”— easily their biggest anthem and utilized this evening as the closing tune on their strong 14 song setlist.

Commercial success always sells albums and show tickets, if you flashback to 1997 it was nearly impossible to find a radio station that was not playing a Third Eye Blind song. The band’s self-titled release went 6x platinum and generated four Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 Hits.

The band began the evening behind a translucent curtain and risers on “Screamer”, the lead single and title track off their forthcoming album due in October. After a curtain drop the band launched into “Never Let You Go”, with frontman Stephan Jenkins jumping down to the front of the stage.  In comparison to their ‘co-headliner’, the 3EB set was elaborate with LED screens and various illuminated set pieces.  Highlights included “Graduate” and “Motorcycle Drive By”—complete with acoustic guitar, always a fan favorite at any 3EB gig.

Saving the best for last, the band completed their main set with “How’s It Going To Be” followed by a quick intermission prior to their 2 song encore of “Losing A Whole Year” and “Semi-Charmed Life”, which was a pure fan sing-along.

There really is nothing like a warm summer weekend night under the stars with live music, this evening helped transport many back nearly twenty years with the help of two iconic bands.

Third Eye Blind plays the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October before heading to Europe for a dozen shows in late October and November. Jimmy Eat World has only one gig on the schedule, a September 8th show in London, UK.
