John 5 & The Creatures @ The Slidebar – 04/08/2018
Guitar wizard John 5 and his band The Creatures played a very intimate show at the Slidebar in Fullerton (capacity about 150 people) on Sunday night April 8 as part of his 2018 It’s Alive solo tour supporting his first live album of the same name. Currently a member of Rob Zombie’s band with past collaborations with the likes of Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson and MANY more, John 5 is without a doubt one of the most skilled, talented and creative guitarists in exitance today.
Having 10 solo guitar albums under his belt, John 5 started doing solo tours a couple years ago and his show has become a must see for any die-hard guitar fan. With a stage setup that includes inflatable pumpkins, a Grim Reaper and other spooky décor, John 5 and his band, bassist Ian Ross and drummer Logan Miles Nix took the Slidebar crowd through a 75 minute journey of guitar driven instrumentals that included several John 5 originals comprised of everything from heavy, driving metal to banjo picking and everything in-between with a few covers thrown in.
In addition to his wickedly amazing guitar chops, the visual of the show is quite a spectacle as well. John 5 actually wore a mask of himself at one point then ripped it off to reveal another mask of a skeleton. His use of various Fender Telecaster guitars also adds to the overall theme of the show. He has a clear Lava guitar that has green “lava” swishing around inside of it that he actually plays with a bow Jimmy Page style and then there is the lighted guitar that has dozens of white lights beaming from it and the coolest was a guitar that beamed several red lasers around the venue.
There is not one instance you are bored or waiting for the next song during this show . . . John 5 captures your attention for every second. It wasn’t until about 35 minutes into the show before he took to the mic and addressed the crowd stating that he was very thankful for everyone coming out and that he loved playing at the Slidebar due to the intimacy (which was cool as he plays festivals in front of 80,000 fans with Rob Zombie). It is obvious how genuine and down to earth John 5 is as he states that he does these solo tours not for the money or fame, he just wants to play his guitar and give the fans a killer show.
The night ended with a fantastic melody of classic guitar songs that included Van Halen, Deep Purple, The Police, Kiss and many more followed by an immediate encore of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. John 5 & The Creatures play their final SoCal date on Wednesday April 11 in Ventura before heading north and ending their tour in Tacoma on April 21.
Go purchase ALL John 5’s solo albums then buy a ticket to see him live – money well spent!
Hero Jr is opened the show and these boys from Indiana rock it hard with their pummeling heavy classic rock sound.
