John Mayer @ The Forum – 04/21/2017Friday night April 21 John Mayer made a triumphant return to Southern California on his “The Search for Everything” World Tour 2017 in support of his recent release of the same name. Joining Mayer for the opening slot is LANY, a Los Angeles based trio playing a hometown show. A beautiful sunny Southern California evening played host to this SOLD OUT show at The Fabulous Forum.

Playing a hometown show, LANY took the stage at 7:30pm and the sparse crowd was obviously familiar with this band as there was lots of cheering and crowd sing-alongs. These alternative/dreamy rockers have their debut self-titled album coming out June 17 and played their single “Good Girls” off that record. Vocalist Paul Jason Klein took a moment to thank everyone for showing up early and thanked John Mayer for being such an inspiration. A great band to get the night going.

At 8:45pm the lights dimmed, the crowd roared (with noticeably mostly female screams) and Mayer and his band started the show with “Belief” then wasting no time by going into a new song “Helpless”. Mayer commanded the stage the entire night and in addition to showcasing his vocal talent, put on an amazing display of six string skills on both the electric and acoustic guitars. One of the great things about John Mayer is he fully absorbs himself into his playing as he make some of the most interesting guitar faces you will see – makes for great entertainment.

John Mayer @ The Forum – 04/21/2017This show was well thought out as it gives the fan a bit of everything John Mayer. The show started with his full band, then he did an acoustic set with just him and his guitar, then he brought out bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan for a few John Mayer Trio songs, then the full band re-emerged and he ended the night on the piano. Some of the highlights of all this was a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” during his acoustic set as well as a cover of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads during the John Mayer Trio. Ryan Adams made a guest appearance for the song “Come Pick Me Up” once the full band was back onstage.

The encore consisted of two of Mayer’s biggest hits “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” and “Waiting on the World to Change” before a second encore that had Mayer on the piano to end the night with a song off the new album titled “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me”. Not one fan walked away from this show disappointed as John Mayer nailed it from start to finish.

Mayer’s Forum show was the first of a few stops in Southern California over the next couple of months. Mayer will play The Honda Center in Anaheim on Tuesday  July 25, and will return to The Forum on Sunday July 30.
