Metal titans Slipknot hit the stage on US soil for the first time in three years on Friday July 26 in Mountain View, CA and the second show of their massive KNOTFEST Roadshow Tour 2019 took place at Glen Helen Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA on Saturday July 27. Over 30,000 heavy metal maniacs braved the 100 degree heat to come rock out not only with the headliner Slipknot but Denmark’s Volbeat, France’s Gojira and Poland’s Behemoth. Historically a destination festival, Slipknot has KNOTFEST on the road this year for 30 stop road trip across the USA (including a stop in Toronto Canada). Without a doubt one of the heaviest tours of the year, Slipknot, Volbeat, Gojira and Behemoth delivered on that with a pummeling show that shook the earth.

Behemoth kicked off the afternoon at 5:30pm with a 35 minute action packed set that began with “Wolves ov Siberia” off their epic 2018 release I Loved You at Your Darkest that had all four band members wearing identical evil looking black masks. Vocalist and guitarist Nergal is one of the most intense performers in the business as he ran around the stage and interacting with the crowd. Other highlights included the use of pyro, Nergal wearing a black papal mitre and blood spewing during the set closer “Chant for Eschaton 2000”. Behemoth set the bar extremely high for the rest of the night.

Behemoth Set List:

Wolves ov Siberia | Daimonos | Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer | Bartzabel | Conquer All | Sabbath Mater | Chant for Eschaton 200

After a 20 minute set change France’s Thunder Gods Gojira dumped a huge pile of HEAVY on San Bernardino as they opened up with “Oroborus” from all the way back in2008’s The Way of all Flesh. Gojira features Joe Duplantier on guitars and vocals with his younger brother Mario Duplantier on drums. Mario is one of the hardest hitting blast masters on the planet and the main reason this band is so boomingly massive. Their eight song set had a massive circle pit going the entire time as the band ended their time onstage with the mighty “Vacuity”

Gojira Set List:

Oroborus | Backbone | Stranded | Flying Whales | Love | The Cell | Silvera | Vacuity

With the sun now ready to set the stifling heat had let up a bit as a breeze kicked in just as Volbeat took the stage with the mid-tempo “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” as the Michael Poulsen led quartet rocked the crowd for a full 60 minutes of rockabilly infused heavy metal. Now many have scratched their heads when it was announced Volbeat was part of this tour but the diversity all the bands have with a common metal bloodline is what makes it so appealing. This was a fun set that had Volbeat played two new songs (“Leviathan” and “Last Day Under the Sun”) off their upcoming August 2 release Rewind, Replay, Rebound.

Volbeat Set List:

The Devil’s Bleeding Crown | Lola Montez | Sad Man’s Tongue | Black Rose | Leviathan | Slaytan | Dead but Rising | A Warrior’s Call / I Only Want to Be With You | Last Day Under the Sun | Doc Holliday | Seal the Deal | Still Countin

The time had come that Southern CA had been waiting for. A huge Slipknot logo was front and center on the massive stage curtain as AC/DC’s “For Those About to Rock – We Salute You” blasted over the PA as the 30,000 plus screamed in anticipation. The curtain dropped and chaos began and never let up for the entire 1 hr 45 min set. The band stormed into the brutal “People = Shit” that had the crowd from front to back in a heavy metal frenzy. The band went right into “(sic)” then frontman Corey Taylor obviously saw the chaos that was ensuing down against the barrier as he demanded that everyone take a step the fuck back and that this was a big family and everyone needs to work together. He stated “nobody was to get hurt on his watch”. After a few minutes to let security get things in order the band played the brutally fast “Get This” that had 30,000 heads banging in unison.

The band has obviously had some members come and go but with all due respect to previous members, Slipknot is as fierce as ever never missing a beat. The bands new masks are both interesting and awesome with Corey Taylors being the most controversial as many either hate it or love it but regardless of your take it works well in a live setting and is eerie as hell. Taylor is as outrageously wild as ever onstage and his voice as piercing as a barking dog. The guitar duo of Mick Thompson and Jim Root continue to brutalize your ears with their breakneck riffs. Drummer Jay Weinberg proves once again he is an inhuman beast on the kit with Shawn “Clown” Crahan and an unknown new member adding additional drumming and keg bashing while their partner in crime Alessandro Venturella on bass is sporting a new white mask. And of course the band is rounded out by the two keyboardist/samplers Sid Wilson and Craig Jones. Nine members going crazy on stage . . . part of what makes a live Slipknot performance so utterly remarkable.

With a new album due on August 9 titled We Are Not Your Kind, the band played “Unsainted” off that disc as well as a “one off” track they released last year “All Out Life”. The setlist was the perfect mix of old, new and everything in-between. The stage was a multi-tier setup with large LED screens, the elevated keg drums on each side of the stage all highlighted with pyro throughout the night making Glen Helen look like the apocalypse had begun.

Slipknot ended the set with “Duality” before playing a two song encore of “Spit it Out” and “Surfacing”. There have been a few large magnitude earthquakes in Southern California recently and no doubt this show had the USGS investigating seismic activity in San Bernardino on this night. Slipknot returned to Southern California with a vengeance and delivered another monster of a show at Glen Helen Amphitheater.

Slipknot will no doubt rule the world once again with the release of their new album and constant touring over the next 2-3 years. KNOTFEST Roadshow continues through early September and is a show NOT to be missed!

Slipknot Set List:

People = Shit | (sic) | Get This | Unsainted | Disasterpiece | Before I Forget | The Heretic Anthem | Psychosocial | The Devil in I | Prosthetics | Vermilion | Custer | Sulfur | All Out Life | Duality

Encore: Spit It Out | Surfacing
