IMG_0998Lieutenant, fronted by Foo Fighters/Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Nate Mendel, recently debuted his new project and showcased material from the band’s first record, If I Kill This Thing We’re All Going To Eat for A Week at The Troubadour on Wednesday April 8 before an enthusiastic capacity crowd and rockstar studded attendees including Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins and Pat Smear. Lieutenant is a band of talented musicians that have a great in-built fan base due to their connection to other well-known acts. Bassist Christian Wargo is from Fleet Foxes, guitarist Paul “Pablo” Wilson is from Snow Patrol and drummer Jesse Wood is from The Naked and Famous.

As a unit, they played with passion and intensity and had a good rapport with the crowd. Unfortunately, a consistently bad sound mix hampered the material as they tried in earnest to deliver it to the audience. There were some notable, distinct variations in tempos and dynamics but it wasn’t enough to make any one song stand out. The material always blended together because there were severe audio issues which were not corrected and sorted out through the entire show. Nate Mendel’s serviceable but limited vocal range couldn’t transcend the technical difficulties, either. Ironically, he chose the sound person on this tour and thanked him from the stage. It’s too bad the openers Banta and Yukon Blonde only benefitted from a far superior, cleaner mix.
