The Melvins @ The Observatory – 07/06/2017

The Melvins @ The Observatory – 07/06/2017On the eve of the release of their 26th studio album (their first double album) A Walk with Love and Death, veteran sludge metal rockers The Melvins played the second night of their massive 12 week tour at The Observatory in Santa Ana. Some 34 years into their career and The Melvins are still packing houses and selling out shows and this night was no exception. Along for the ride as openers are New York’s beautifully heavy and eccentric Spotlights.

Spotlights took the stage and delivered the perfect set to warm up the crowd for The Melvins. This power trio took you through a 45 minute journey into the heavy mixed in with beautiful slower and seductive material. Led by the married couple of Mario and Sarah Quintero (guitars/vocals and bass/vocals respectively), Spotlights supported Deftones in 2016 and this run with The Melvins will help catapult them to the next level.

The Melvins are a bare-bones no frills band that is all about the music. Their stage setup has no props, not even a banner with the band’s name or any mention of the word Melvins on-stage. When Buzz Osbourne, drummer Dale Crover and bassist Steven Shane McDonald took the stage they delivered a 16 song set of pure heaviness. With solid red lights throughout their set, the band never really stopped to address the crowd and focused on letting the music do the talking.

The wonderful thing about a Melvins setlist is they have so much material they really are able to change things up from tour to tour and on this night the setlist was very different than what they presented in 2016. They mixed in three new songs “Euthanasia”, “Edgar the Elephant” and “Sober-Delic (Acid Only)” which mixed in perfectly with their timeless sound. Each member of this band is a star in their own right, displaying extreme talent on their instruments.

All while the band played the mosh pit was in full effect as the dedicated Melvins fans made the most of their time with the band in this live setting. There are plenty of opportunities to catch The Melvins live as they are on a 12 week run across the USA with a few stops in Canada but the tour actually loops around the USA twice so Southern California will get another opportunity to witness this live assault on August 22 at The Echo in Los Angeles.
