Metal Allegiance plays the Whisky a Go Go on January 9, 2016Metal Allegiance is the all-star team of heavy metal, spawned from the Metal Masters clinics by former Marketing Director at Samson Technologies Corp Mark Menghi. Metal Allegiance started as a live revolving door of musicians from the metal brotherhood of bands like Megadeth, Testament, Winery Dogs, Anthrax, Death Angel and many more and they assembled in 2015 to record an album of original tracks. With this album under their belt they have now taken this metal brotherhood  on the road and made a stop at the world famous Whisky a Go Go on Saturday night January 9 for a SOLD OUT show. Typically this night would be epic with just the Metal Allegiance taking the stage but coincidently with the recent passing of Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister (RIP), Metal Allegiance was joined by a few special guests to celebrate the life Lemmy and play a handful of Motorhead classics.

The band hit the stage at 11:00pm and kicked off their two hour set with “Electric Eye” from Judas Priest. Death Angel vocalist Mark Osegueda took the lead on this song and shared vocal duties with Mastodon’s Troy Sanders throughout the night. The band played a mixture of Metal Allegiance originals as well as many of heavy metal’s classic cuts. From “Electric Eye” the band went right into Iron Maiden’s “Ides of March” with a cast of Mark Menghi on bass, Testament and Machine Heads Alex Skolnick and Phil Demmel on guitar respectively and Mike Portnoy on drums (Portnoy played drums through the entire Metal Allegiance set prior to the Lemmy jam). At this point it was clear this would be a special night but as soon as Troy Sanders hit the stage and the band launched into Metallica’s “Creeping Death”, things got crazy and the moshpit started and pretty much never ended.

Metal Allegiance plays the Whisky a Go Go on January 9, 2016Next the band belted out two original songs “Can’t Kill the Devil” and “Let Darkness Fall” as Megadeth’s David Ellefson rotated with Mark Menghi on bass. Osegueda took lead vocals on Accept’s “Fast as a Shark” and Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell” then the first special guest hit the stage, Sepultura’s Andreas Kisser for a version of Sepultura’s “Territory”, at which point the crowd just got that much more insane. Two more original songs were played next then the set ended with three classics from the big three of the late 70’s – Black Sabbath, Van Halen and AC/DC with Alex Skolnick playing “Eruption” on a black and white EVH Frankenstein guitar. Only early January and this easily could be the metal show of the year in Hollywood. The All-Star team of metal musicians put on a powerful, beast of a show and this brotherhood not only was having fun performing for the fans, it was obvious they were having fun being on stage together. This ended the main Metal Allegiance set and after a five minute break the band returned and began a special tribute to Motorheads fallen leader Lemmy Kilmister.

The tribute began with “Killed by Death” with Osegueda on vocals then things started to get interesting as the special guests starting coming out. Drummer John Tempesta and his brother Mike Tempesta (who played lead guitar) hit the stage for a rendition of  “We Are the Road Crew” then Tempesta gave up the drum seat to former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo for a killer version of “Overkill”. The momentum never let up as Mike Portnoy introduced Slipknot’s Corey Taylor who took over vocals for the last three Motorhead songs. Andreas Kisser again joined the band onstage as Taylor delivered “Iron Fist” then Motorhead’s own Mikkey Dee came onstage to say a few words and asked for 15 seconds of silence in Lemmy’s honor and although a bit tipsy Dee then took over the drum duties for “The Chase”. The tribute ended with an epic version of “Ace of Spades” that featured Taylor, Lombardo, Ellefson, Skolnick and Phil Demmel. WOW, Hollywood just witnessed an amazing, emotional and sincere tribute to the one and only – Lemmy Kilmister.

Metal Allegiance plays the Whisky a Go Go on January 9, 2016At this point everyone that participated in the nights event took the stage (yes it was crowded) and ended this once in a lifetime event with a killer version of Metallica’s “Seek n Destroy”. A night not be soon forgotten, Metal Allegiance delivered a kickass, fun show and kudos to all who participated for a heartfelt tribute to a “one-of-kind” Lemmy Kilmister.

Other highlights of the night included opening bands Doll Skin and Cage. Doll Skin is an all-female band of young rockers full of piss n vinegar who rocked the Whisky and made LOTS of new fans. San Diego’s Cage delivered an energetic set of power-metal with lead singer Sean “The Hell Destroyer” Peck delivering vocals and a stage presence very much in line with Rob Halford.
