Misfits @ House of Blues San Diego – 11/16/2014
Legendary horror punk icons the Misfits brought their manic musical energy to the House of Blues San Diego on Sunday November 16th. With a stage setup featuring blood red lighting, a medieval drum riser, and plenty of “Fiend Skulls,” the mood for this concert was set before the band ever took the stage. For a group formed in the late seventies that has gone through so many lineup changes, the Misfits are still an incredibly popular band today.
Tons of San Diego punk rockers wearing their finest leather and chains were wrapped all the way around the block on 5th street waiting to enter the venue. Featuring original member Jerry Only on bass guitar and vocals, as well as former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena, and drummer Eric “Chupacabra” Arce formerly of Murphy’s Law, The Misfits are a patchwork unit but one well-schooled in punk traditions. Barely slowing down to talk in between relentless sets of short fast, and loud tunes, Jerry Only seemed to bark out the count off for each song almost before the last one had finished. The current incarnation of the band did sound great together and ripped quickly through a huge 38 song set list of classic Misfits tunes. Highlights included the classic “She,” “Vampire Girl,” “Static Age,” and of course “Die, Die My Darling.”
