P!nk @ Honda Center – 04/13/2019
Over a year into her Beautiful Trauma World Tour, P!nk brought her traveling circus back to Honda Center in Anaheim Saturday April 13th. This leg of the tour comes less than 11 months after the international pop icon performed locally with the same stage setup and similar setlist. After spending much of 2018 on the road in support of her 7th studio album, this portion of the tour triumphantly returned to SoCal with Julia Michaels serving as the opening act. The influential and adventurous star has sold over 90 million albums worldwide, resulting in 3 Grammy Awards.
With a sold-out crowd primed and ready for a fun Saturday night, the singer kicked off the 21 song set appropriately with “Get The Party Started”. In what would best be described as the closest thing to a Cirque Du Soleil performance in the form of a pop concert, P!nk began the evening harnessed up and flying around the stage eventually coming to rest upside down on top of a giant prop chandelier.
During the extensive tour, P!nk has managed to produce a new EP—Hurts 2B Human, which she will drop April 26th. Both “Walk Me Home” (the lead single) and “Hustle” received stage time as a preview of what’s to come from her latest release. Interludes and videos helped allow time for stage and wardrobe changes while each helped set up the next act with the ‘Women Are Strong’ and ‘My Daughter is Beautiful’ videos proving to be the strongest and most moving snippets.
In addition to the numerous aerial acrobatic moments, the show contained all the high production concert elements—numerous costume changes, confetti, pyro and fire…the latter making its flaming debut during (most appropriately) “Just Like Fire”, warming up the already toasty venue. Her greatest hits are so vast that many chart topping hits didn’t make the cut during this production, such as “U + Ur Hand”, “Don’t Let Me Get Me”, “Sober”, “Most Girls”, “Please Don’t Leave Me”, “Family Portrait” and “There You Go”—probably in favor of newer tracks.
“What About Us” easily turned out to be the most powerful moment of the evening, offering up the authority of P!nk’s vocals and the incredible theatrical performance of her supporting cast. As the show continued to move along, each song reminded the casual P!nk fan of the vast catalog this 39 year old has to offer. “Raise Your Glass” elicited a full dance off and intro for each of her backup dancers.
Strapped into a fully revolving harness for “So What”, she made an aerial victory lap around the Anaheim arena—offering a closeup for everyone in the bottom bowl as she flew overhead. A stripped down version of “Glitter In The Air” perfectly closed out the 2 hour set. The overall positivity and empowerment of the evening sticks with you for days following the show.
Earlier in the evening, songwriter turned singer/performer Julia Michaels helped set the stage for P!nk with a fast 8 song, half hour performance that helped prime the crowd. Michaels has helped co-write songs with such A-Listers as Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears & Linkin Park. Together with her four piece band, the 2018 Grammy nominee for Best New Artist worked in tracks such as “Happy”, “Pink” and closed with her 2017 breakthrough single “Issues”.
One additional show in SoCal remains this week at The Forum in Los Angeles on Friday, April 19th. The current North American tour continues through May 22nd when it wraps up with two consecutive shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After a short break the tour resumes with an extensive 27 date European tour that concludes August 11th in the Netherlands.
