Puddle Of Mudd @ House Of Blues Anaheim – 04/18/2019

Packaging a tour that brings together a quintet of acts that dominated the modern rock airwaves in the early 2000’s, Puddle of Mudd brought their Muddfest 2019 to the House of Blues in Anaheim Thursday, April 18th. A near sold out crowd enjoyed over four hours of post grunge rock and roll from Trapt, Saliva, Saving Abel, Tantric and headliners Puddle of Mudd.

In the era of nü metal, all bands in the lineup had radio friendly chart topping hits but no one shined brighter than Wes Scantlin and his bandmates that formed Puddle of Mudd way back in 1991.Originally discovered by Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit, the band would finally break out in 2001 with their 5x platinum release Come Clean. The EP would produce 4 chart topping hits and catapulted the band into the mainstream. In 2002 they received 4 Billboard Music Awards, including Rock Artists Of The Year.

The album’s lead single, “Control” was their show opener and immediately resonated with the beer drinkin’ crowd. Mixing in a snippet of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath, it was an extended version that also focused on a Scantlin guitar solo. “Drift & Die”, another monster hit produced one more lengthy guitar solo and showcased the band’s ability to produce straight forward, unapologetic rock & roll.

Scantlin took little time in between songs to chat up the crowd, preferring to let his music do the talking. A thunderous cover of AC/DC’s “TNT” lead into the band’s final two songs of the long evening. “She Hates Me’ reenergized the crowd while “Blurry”, easily the band’s most successful single closed out the evening just prior to midnight.

Bay Area rockers Trapt packed 9 songs into a short half hour run. Bathed in dark blue light, the familiar hit “Still Frame” opened up their set that also included a new song, “Fire”. An electrified version of their 2002 hit “Headstrong”, was an appropriate closer.

Veteran rockers Saliva brought plenty of colorful spotlights to their 30 minute set that included many hits including “Ladies & Gentlemen” and “Always”. Although not their original lead singer, Bobby Amaru has stepped in nicely for former frontman Josey Scott. On “Click Click Boom”, Amaru brought a young fan onstage and had her rock out next to him as he and the rest of the crowd belted out the tune that was popularized by the original Fast & Furious movie.

Puddle Of Mudd returns to SoCal next month with a gig at The Canyon in Agoura Hills on May 11th. Later this summer fans can reconnect with the band at additional local dates—including The Canyon Club in Montclair (August 24th), The Rose in Pasadena (Sept 6th) and The Canyon in Santa Clarita (September 7th). The band has a packed schedule with random solo shows and Muddfest 2019 dates scheduled across North America through the summer.
