Although the weather was a bit cool, summer 2019 got off to a scorching start on Thursday night June 20 as Santana played the first night of his Supernatural Now tour at Fivepoint Amphitheater in Irvine. Kickstarting the heat on this night were The Doobie Brothers in the opening slot on this ultimate classic rock tour. Celebrating the significant commercial success (#1 album, multiple Grammy Awards) and all-around creativeness of 1999’s Supernatural, Santana will tour across the United States to commemorate the albums 20th anniversary throughout the summer.

One of the all-time greatest sing-along bands The Doobie Brothers started off the night with the high energy “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and played several other TDB classics including “Jesus Is Just Alright”, “China Grove” and “Black Water”. Original TDB members Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston along with longtime member John McFee look and sound fantastic in 2019 and along with the rest of the band put on one hell of a kick-ass show to warm up those in attendance for the amazing Santana band.

Carlos Santana is a living legend having put out music consistently for the last 50 years – an incredible career and its not over yet. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of his smash album Supernatural as well as out supporting his June 7 release Africa Speaks, Santana is dazzling fans across the USA in 2019 with his signature Latin infused, guitar driven rock n roll. With a large video wall backing the stage, Santana and the eight members of his band took the stage and kicked off the show with “Soul Sacrifice” from all the way back to 1969 with images of Santana playing at Woodstock on the video screen.

Santana’s music and presence radiates an aura of tranquility, peace and love, you just can’t help but to be overcome with those feelings while viewing his performance. Santana’s effortless playing is a sight to be seen as he often closes his eyes and just becomes one with his instrument. In addition to Santana’s playing, his band is top notch with multiple percussionists, vocalists, guitars, bass, keyboards and his wife Cindy Blackman Santana on drums. There is no ego in this band as Santana gives all his band members time in the spotlight (literally) as they all are able to showcase their respective skills on their instruments.

The band played seven songs off the 1999 album Supernatural as well as the mega-classics “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye como va” along with “Breaking Down the Door” off the new album Africa Speaks. The night ended with a several song encore, concluding with an extended version of “Love, Peace and Happiness”. If you were looking for an opportunity to forget the problems of the world, relax and enjoy life . . . that is EXACTLY what the two hours of Santana live did for 12,000 people in Irvine on this night.
