Summer Slaughter Tour @ The Novo – 08/11/2018
Summer Slaughter is an annual heavy metal tour, taking place in- you guessed it- summer, and it has ravaged cities across the country since 2007. On Saturday August 11 The Novo by Microsoft, in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, hosted the most extreme tour of the year. This year’s bill features a stacked lineup of bands that includes Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, Allegaeon and The Agony Scene. This all-day metal bonanza continues to deliver after a decade in the business!
First up on the Summer Slaughter stage was Entheos. This band immediately stood out with Chaney Crabb’s vocals, as vicious and guttural as any of her male tour mates. The crowd seemed to genuinely enjoy their performance, and the late arrivals missed out on a great set from a great band!

Terror Universal is band making a statement on this tour, and the statement is that they cannot be stopped. They exploded onto the stage wearing masks reminiscent of bands like Slipknot and Mushroomhead, although they played a sound all their own. This is a band you do not want to miss!

Allegaeon was next to showcase their talent, and “energetic” doesn’t even begin to describe the tone of their set! They bring a unique brand of melodic death metal to the table, with blistering guitar riffs, but not the doom-and-gloom lyrics one might expect of their intimidating sound. The band released a brand new single, titled “Animate,” earlier this year and all Allegaeon fans are hoping for a new full-length album soon!

The Agony Scene came back to Southern California on this monstrous tour for the first time in several years, and as such, the crowd really amped up when it came time for their set at The Novo. Frontman Mike Williams performs with such passion, it exudes into the audience. The Agony Scene is touring in support of their new album released earlier this year, entitled Tormentor.

Erra is a progressive metalcore band that combines harsh vocals with clean, melodic vocals for a unique metal experience. Their extreme melodies prompted the crowd surfing to begin, and those few brave souls bobbed their way to the front of the pit. Erra is another band to tour in support of new material, as they also released a new album in 2018, called Neon.

More and more fans started to pack into the Novo for one of the more well known artists on the bill, Veil of Maya. Still riding on the success of their 2017 release, False Idol, the band captivated the audience with their polyrhythmic guitar riffs, and crushing vocals. Guitarist Marc Okubo was energy incarnate, effortlessly gliding around the stage with his axe. Veil of Maya is an overall fan favorite on the Summer Slaughter tour!

When Born of Osiris was set to take the stage, the atmosphere intensified, as the room filled with darkness, and “Chop Suey” by System Of A Down played over the speakers to draw out the anticipation. The band appeared on stage, and the audience was invigorated by their energy. Keyboardist and vocalist Joe Buras was a pleasure to watch on stage, as he came out from behind the keyboard often, and even went down to the crowd to interact with fans from the other side of the barricade. Born of Osiris also released a new single this year, “Silence the Echo.”

The 2018 Summer Slaughter Tour is packed to the brim with heavy and talented bands. This lineup would be worth it to go out of the way for and those planning to attend should come early to catch the brilliant opening acts!
