The City National Grove in Anaheim hosted the Symphony X and Iced Earth co-headline tour with opening act Warbringer on Tuesday night February 21. New vocalist Stu Block did an excellent job of covering the classic Iced Earth material originally performed by singer Matt Barlow as well as showcasing his vocal ability on songs off their latest album Dystopia. Iced Earth guitarist and founder Jon Schaffer displayed his solid guitar melodies and galloping riffs throughout the Iced earth set.

Symphony X played headliner on this night of the tour and although the venue was less than half full played a killer set as the fans that were there seemed to be die-hard Symphony X fans. Lead vocalist Russell Allen put on a stellar vocal performance and certainly entertained the crowd with his comedic stage antics. The highlight of Symphony X’s progressive brand of music and the live show is without a doubt Michael Romeo’s guitar playing. Romeo is a pleasure to listen to and even more enjoyable to witness live. His progressive metal meets neo-classical style reminds me of Yngwie Malmsteen’ s style of playing. Symphony X is supporting their latest album Iconoclast.

LA thrashers Warbringer opened the show with their brand of in-your-face/balls-to-the-wall modern thrash metal. Lead vocalist John Kevill is as animated as they get and certainly gets the crowd going with circle pits and crowd surfing. Warbringer warmed up the crowd with an in-your face 30 minute thrash attack.

This co-headline tour runs through March 11 and then look out for additional Iced Earth and Symphony X live dates throughout 201
