The Atomic Punks & Motley Inc. @ The Hangar – 08/15/2021
Tribute bands – there is a ton of them – a lot of good ones but only a handful of GREAT ones and Southern California happens to be home base for two of the best – The Atomic Punks and Motley Inc. Sunday night August 15 these two bands closed out the OC Fair summer concert series at The Hangar with an epic SOLD OUT tribute to Motley Crue and early Van Halen respectively.
Now these two bands also have something else in common other than being two of the best . . . die-hard fans already know this but for casual fans this may not be so obvious. They are virtually the same band – YES, bass player Joe Lester, guitarist Lance Turner and drummer Scott Patterson are members of both bands, just a bit of a clothing change and boom – easy transformation from Motley Crue to Van Halen. And you can hear the musical talent each member has as they go between bands. Oh and the vocalists – two extremely talented individuals – you have Timmy Craven with Motley Inc who is obviously Motley Crue approved since they picked him to be the voice of Vince Neil in their biopic movie “The Dirt” and with Atomic Punks you have Brian Geller – a blonde haired singer that has an uncanny resemblance to David Lee Roth, he has the moves, the stage outfits but most importantly the vocal chops – Geller nails it every time.
Motley Inc. kicked off the night with “Kickstart My Heart” and blasted out hit after classic hit – if you close your eyes you would think you are at a Crue show in the late 80’s – it’s that good and the fans – well the fans are a big part of the show – they LOVE it – lots of fan energy for Motley Inc.
And after a 25-minute break, The Atomic Punks hit the stage and again – the fans went crazy – “Hot for Teacher” opened the show and off they went – “Jamie’s Cryin”, “Bottoms Up”, Runnin with the Devil” – all the classic VH that we all know and love played to perfection. Obviously, the highlight of any Van Halen show was Eddie’s guitar solo and Lance Turner does a scorching rendition of “Eruption” that really showcases his guitar mastery.
“Aint’t Talkin ‘bout Love” and “Unchained” ended the night to a SOLD OUT crowd with everyone on their feet. Motley Crue and Van Halen are without a doubt two of the biggest most popular bands to come out of the 80’s and Motley Inc. and The Atomic Punks are without a doubt two of the best to represent a fresh but classic version of each band. Keep your eyes peeled for these bands to hit your town (and YES they not only play in SoCal – they travel all across the good ole USA for shows) – you will enjoy a night of music like you haven’t seen and heard since holding up your lighter in your local coliseum back in 1985.
