The Darlings @ The Brixton 8/15/09
South bay natives The Darlings returned home last week to play their first headlining show. Playing to a large crowd at t
he Redondo Beach Pier’s intimate little hotspot the Brixton, The Darlings smashed through a mind-blowing set of crowd favorites.
Working through a 15 song regular set, the band kept the crowd rocking with favorites off their self-titled EP, including “Where do we Go,” “Lacerate” and “Dead Light.” The raucous crowd kept venue security busy as the tightly wound pit continued to grow. Guitarist Chris Kranes scolded the pit dwellers on several occasions reminding them, “when someone falls down you pick them up.”
Vocalist Buddy Harris has a stage presence of a seasoned veteran, knowing when to slow things down and interact with the crowd, while maintaining the balance of keeping a high-energy show moving.
After an hour long set the band left the stage, only to return moments later in order for the crowd to take out their aggression during the quick charged anthem “Love Story.” Performing a revised version of the Ramones “Rock Away Beach,” with the chorus changed to Redondo Beach the Darlings showed why they are masters at what they do, performing a version of the song which was even better than the original.
The foursome ended the night rightly so with “It’s Gone” leaving many in the tightly packed venue crying for more.
Why one of the major labels have not quickly snatched up this powerful foursome is a mystery to me. wouldn’t suspect that these boys will remain unsigned for long.
If you missed this show, be sure to catch one of their upcoming shows while they are still in these intimate venues. The Darlings will play The Shore in Hermosa Beach on Sep. 2, Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara with Strung Out on Sep 5, and the Galaxy in Santa Ana with Guttermouth on Oct. 10.
Be on the look-out for the bands first Full-length album to be released later this year as well. For more information and to stay current with all their news, you can visit the bands Myspace page at www.myspace.com/thedarlings or become a fan on their facebook page.
