Train @ Sleep Train Amphitheatre – 05/23/2015

San Francisco based rockers Train brought their “Picasso At The Wheel” Summer Tour to Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, CA on Saturday May 23rd. Opening acts included folk rocker Matt Nathanson and fellow alt-rockers The Fray. The evening was truly a mix of demographics as kids and parents of all ages were seen streaming into the large outdoor venue. The sporadic drizzling of rain throughout the evening only added to the Bay Area feel of this enjoyable late-May concert.

Matt Nathanson was an enjoyable warmup for the evening. His guitar work and energetic style got the crowd moving and up “off the plastic” as he put it. Songs like the hit “Come On Get Higher” set the mood perfectly. Nathanson is out touring supporting his latest 2013 album Last of the Great Pretenders.

Denver Colorado band The Fray were another great addition to the touring lineup. The band, best known for 2005’s “How To Save A Life,” has more hit songs than you might realize and their stage performance was exhilarating. Lead singer Issac Slade, not content to just sit and play piano, spent the latter part of the set perched atop his instrument encouraging the lingering crowd to join the party.

Train is such a fantastic live band, it’s a treat to see them in person. Just as a unit there collective sound is really well polished.  Lead singer Pat Monahan is not showing any signs of aging, his soaring voice easily ripped through several hours of hits and well picked covers. Doing a dead on rendition of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” would be a death sentence for many a touring rock band, but somehow Train pulled it off. The set was long and featured tons of hits including “Calling All Angels,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” and closer “Drops of Jupiter.” However, newer material from their latest album Bulletproof Picasso made of most of the evening and fit in great with the older songs.
