Whitechapel & The Black Dahlia Murder @ House of Blues Anaheim – 07/06/2018
There have been many brutal metal tours come through Anaheim in 2018 – Anthrax/Killswitch Engage, Exodus/Municipal Waste, Soulfly/Nile and just when you think it can’t get any more intense, The Black Dahlia Murder and Whitechapel announce a co-headline tour with Fleshgod Apocolypse, Aversions Crown and Shadow of Intent. This tour made a stop at House of Blues in Anaheim on Friday July 6 on one of the hottest days of the year as it topped off at about 110 degrees in Anaheim late in the afternoon. Not only was it HOT, this show was officially SOLD-OUT as 2,000 metalheads invaded the venue thirsty for METAL!
Shadow of Intent kicked off the night followed by Aversions Crown each played a solid 30 minute set showcasing their down-tuned deathcore flavor of metal. Both bands had the floor moving early and was the perfect way to start this evening in preparation for the headliners.
Italy’s Fleshgod Apocolypse took the stage next with a slightly re-arranged lineup as Francesco Paoli (original frontman and longtime drummer) has taken back his original role of vocalist after the departure of Tommaso Riccardi back in October of 2017. While replacing a frontman is never easy, Fleshgod Apololypse is for the better with Paoli leading the band based on his killer performance.
The band mixes in piano and operatic vocals to its Death Metal delivery making for some beautifully beastial sounds. This is most likely the last bit of touring Fleshgod Apocolypse will be doing for 2016’s King so hopefully new material is on the horizon for this notable band.
Fleshgod Apocolypse Set List:
The Violation | Healing Through War | Cold as Perfection | Prologue | Epilogue | The Fool | The Egoism | The Forsaking
If there is a voice of Hell, then Phil Bozeman would be what it sounds like with his guttural Death Metal growls and throaty vocals . . . Bozeman along with the low end of Gabe Crisp on bass and drummer Ernie Iniguez along with the triple guitar attack of Ben Savage, Alex Wade and Zach Householder took the stage and delivered their 2008 album This is Exile in its entirety to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the release.
Any fan of Whitechapel knows the extent of the brutality they bring live on stage but on this night the brutality was above and beyond any show of the past as they pummeled through each song from This is Exile. The band kept the between song banter to a minimum and let the music do the talking as the mosh pit and crowd surfing intensified throughout the set.
Upon completing the 11 songs on This is Exile, the band kept it old-school by playing two songs – “Vicer Exciser” and “Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation” off their 2007 release The Somatic Defilement which showcased Whitechapel at their rawest most intense of their performance on this night. The premier Deathcore kings just played their most lethal show that Southern California has seen from this band.
Whitechapel Set List:
Father of Lies | This Is Exile | Possession | To All that Are Dead | Exalt | Somatically Incorrect | Death Becomes Him | Daemon (The Procreated) | Eternal Refuge | Of Legions | Messiahbolical | Vicer Exciser | Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation
Now 10:30pm and the crowd hot, sweaty and feeling their second wind reached deep inside to let it all out when The Black Dahlia Murder hit the stage as the crowd surfing began and never stopped the second Trevor Strnad hit the stage. On this tour The Black Dahlia Murder is also playing an entire album – 2017’s Nightbringers but unlike Whitechapel who played This is Exile in exact order of the album, The Black Dahlia Murder threw in a few older classics in between songs as they went through Nightbringers.
By the end of their set, The Black Dahlia Murder had completed the complete annihilation of House of Blues Anaheim . . . This tour packs a serious gut punch and re-defines brutal live music!
The Black Dahlia Murder Set List:
Widowmaker | Of God and Serpent, of Spectre and Snake | Matriarch | Contagion | Nightbringers | Jars | Kings of the Nightworld | What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse | Catacomb Hecatomb | As Good as Dead | The Lonely Deceased | Everything Went Black | Statutory Ape | Deathmask Divine
