Wolfmother @ House of Blues San Diego – 05/16/2019
Wolfmother, the Australian heavy rockers led by wild haired front man Andrew Stockdale brought a super energetic weeknight show to the House of Blues San Diego on Thursday May 16th. The band is on a short run of West Coast gigs before heading to some larger festivals in Mexico and touring throughout Europe later this year. Acknowledging the packed San Diego audience, Stockdale indicated that the band must visit California at least every six months because of the crowd reactions they get here. The San Diego fans seemed to agree singing along to every song in the set and air drumming furiously along the way.
Stockdale seemed to relish in the audience’s energy running all around the stage, bobbing his intense flame like hair, and manically strumming his trademark Gibson SG guitar. A special treat was his kind acknowledgement of the many photographers in attendance as they left the photo pit after the 3rd song in the set. Stockdale was apparently once a fledgling music photographer himself and has great respect for these fine folks. The rest of the current lineup of Wolfmother’s touring outfit including drummer Ian Hammish Rosser (who was celebrating a birthday), and bassist Brad Heald seem content to simply back up Stockdale and let him do the heavy lifting and crowd interaction.
The band stuck to the hits drawing most of the songs in the set from their 2005 self-titled debut. Songs like “Woman”, “The Joker and the Thief” and “Dimension” are still staples of hard rock radio 14 years on. A special highlight in the set came during the encore when drummer Chris Cester of Australian band Jet was brought out on stage. He and Stockdale have recently collaborated on a song called “Chase The Feeling.” Here’s hoping that song makes it to the next Wolfmother record, coming sometime soon.
