Yngwie Malmsteen @ House of Blues Anaheim – 05/05/2019
Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the premier guitar virtuoso’s’ in metal music and has some of the fastest fingers in the business and proved that on Sunday May 5 at House of Blues in Anaheim. Out in support of his Blues based March 2019 release Blue Lightning, Malmsteen is on a 7 week tour taking him from coast to coast across the USA. Support on this run includes two not so well known but killer bands, Paralandra (a very Halestorm-esque sounding band) and Sunlord that gives you a very Motorhead vibe – be sure to get there early and check out these two rocking openers.
Yngwie took the stage with very elaborate stage lighting with lots of reds and yellows along with lots of fog backed by a wall of Marshall amps as he and his band went into “Rising Force” and began 75 minutes of a six-string thrill ride. Decked out in his trademark black leather pants, jewelry and leather boots, Yngwie effortlessly put on a display of six-string mastery, sweeping, pinching and tapping on his Fender Stratocaster guitar while throwing in a few guitar twirls around his body along with launching the guitar 10 feet over his head and catching it throughout the show.
Malmsteen’s band currently consists of keyboardist Nick Marino, bassist Ralph Ciavolino and drummer Brian Wilson of which Malmsteen trades off lead vocals with Marino on certain songs. Yngwie played several of the classics you would expect as well as the new Blues inspired “Blue Lightning” with one of the show highlights being his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”. The night ended with Malmsteen delivering a blistering acoustic guitar solo followed by two of his biggest hits “Black Star” and “I’ll See the Light Tonight”.
Yngwie Malmsteen remains at the top of the list in regards to premier rock n roll guitarists and shows no signs of letting up. Be sure to catch Yngwie as well as Paralandra and Sunlord as they make their way across the country.
